What is art therapy?

Art therapy emerged in the beginning of the 20th century and transformed into a clinical practice and profession around the middle of the century. There are different orientations, methods and techniques which are applied within a group or with an individual.

The practices of art therapy are based on studies of human development and psychological theories, and they come into practice after the various therapeutic methods with the objective to help with cases of emotional conflict, physical and social deficiencies, self-esteem etc. The fundament of art therapy is the process that a person uses to communicate his subconscious, since art is utilized as a language of non-verbal communication.

The artistic therapy as such is a combination of art and psychotherapy, using each of these elements, merge them and stimulate each of them through the fusion. The work with materials such as paint, modeling clay or other visual medias gives every person the possibility to find new answers in their conflict, after finishing a creation in a session. The bond of trust between therapist and patient is fundamental in order for the patient to dig deeper inside himself, doing so in his own rhythm.
